HIGH POINT, N.C. — Patton Gossett (285) has earned the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week after going 5-0 in competition.
Gossett started his week against conference opponent Belmont Abbey in Newberry’s first conference match-up of the season. Gossett came away with a 5-1 decision, defeating Mike Siwiec. The Wolves went on to win the dual 37-9.
Gossett and the rest of the Wolves competed at the Coker Duals last weekend where they showed their dominance. Gossett got off on the right foot, picking up a fall in his first match against Cameron Coffman of Ohio Valley, needing 2:07 to do so.
Gossett had a tall task to handle in his next match, facing the ninth ranked heavy weight in the country of No. 22 Mercyhurst Jacob Robb. The teams were tied coming into the match, knowing the winner would win the dual. The match was close in the early going until Gossett went on the offensive and came away with an 8-3 decision win.
Gossett went on to defeat Matthew Bourne of Bluefield, needing 2:02 to get the fall. Gossett finished out his day with another fall coming in the first period of action against Truett McConnell, defeating Cameron Hamby.
This is Gossett’s first Wrestler of the Week award and Newberry’s fourth wrestler to win the award.
