COLUMBIA — Paul C. Akers, M.D., 67, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at his residence.

He was born on August 3, 1945, in San Diego, Calif., son of the late Paul Addison and Emmee Nelson Akers. He was a 1968 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his Masters Degree in 1970 from M.U.S.C. in immunology and bacteriology and his M.D. from M.U.S.C. in 1974. He was Board Certified in family practice. He loved rescuing dogs and going to his mountain property and roaming around with Max, his beloved Brittany.

Paul was an avid Tar Heel fan and loved watching them play. He was especially devoted to U.N.C. basketball.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, a volunteer with Pets Inc., a member of C.D.C. panel for water contamination at Camp LeJune, N.C., and a member of the Property Owners Association at Deerfield Meadows in Hot Springs, N.C.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Summer Akers, Ph.D.; daughters, Elizabeth Bartlee (Scott) Davis of Charleston and Caroline Gibson Akers, Ph.D. of Columbia; son, Paul Summer Akers of Columbia; and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth B. Summer of Newberry.

He was predeceased by his sister Penny Wilson and Brittany Spaniel, Max.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Rosemont Cemetery by the Rev. Elizabeth Morgan.

Pallbearers will be Henry Summer, Walter Summer, Ralph Summer, Roger Davis, Scott Davis, and Wayne Green.
