NEWBERRY — Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Bates, 63, will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bates passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at National Healthcare in Clinton.

Born in Newberry County, he was the son of Mary Ellen Bates Rikard and Calvin Boyd Jr. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a graduate of Gallman High School. Mr. Bates was an Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Hattie Wise Bates; mother, Mary Ellen Bates Rikard; father, Calvin Boyd Jr.; daughter, Erica B. Tuggle; son, William Charles Bates both of Norristown, Pa.; sisters, Marie Rikard, Rosa Glenn and Belinda Bates all of Newberry; Callie McKorkle and Rev. Dr. Sherry Highbaugh both of Columbia; brothers, George Ray Rikard and Robert Lee Rikard both of Newberry; Wayman Boyd of Prosperity; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one aunt, one uncle, mother-in-law, Gussie Wise; one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, one sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews.
