NEWBERRY — Newberry Elementary kindergarten teacher Jacqueline A. Holmes was selected to represent the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5934 and its Ladies Auxiliary.

Holmes was honored at the District 4 award banquet program Jan. 19 in Fountain Inn. The honor was highlighted in time for Black History Month in February.

Carl Lyles is the Post Commander, Oliver Palmore is the Senior Vice Commander and program coordinator and the quarter master is Calvin Singleton. They were there to honor Holmes.

Holmes won the local post and auxiliary teacher’s award and is the winner of the District 4 teacher’s award and the VFW of the U.S. Department of South Carolina for 2012-13’s Teacher of the Year for grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

Holmes is waiting to claim her all-expense paid trip to the VFW conference in Washington, D.C., to receive her National Teacher of the Year award.

The criterion Holmes met was promoting citizenship education at her school as well as in her classroom, community and church involvement outside of school activities related to working with others and giving to her country. She also exhibited a commitment to teach patriotism to her students.

The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics in their classroom and promote America’s history, traditions and institutions effectively.

The VFW National Teacher of the Year winners will receive a monetary donation along with plaques and an all expense paid trip to the conference. Holmes is married to Wilbert T. Holmes Sr.
