LITTLE MOUNTAIN — Former Little Mountain Councilwoman Roxie Derrick was recently presented a painting of a collage of Rocky Branch natural area scenes by the officials of the Town of Little Mountain.
Derrick donated a special ecologically sensitive, conservation area of about 44 acres to the municipality which has completed construction of a trail head facility with picnic tables, parking and wheel-chair accessible restrooms. A handicap accessible public walking trail of approximately 1.5 miles in length should be all completed by July 4.
“Roxie’s very generous contribution of a portion of Little Mountain is such a special gift that will be preserved for the benefit of present and future generations. Our community is so fortunate,” said Jayroe.
Newberry County artist Joseph Counts of Pomaria was commissioned to paint scenes of this beautiful conservation area which has more than 360 species of flora and a scenic stream with a small waterfall.
Counts, a retired public school teacher, began seriously painting in the early 1970s and has studied with a number of midlands artists. He continues to paint for pleasure, occasionally selling a painting and donating original works for auctions to local animal rescue organizations, another of his lifelong passions. Joe also has illustrated two children’s stories and does illustrations for a local publisher in Newberry.
