PROSPERITY — Students at Prosperity-Rikard Elementary revved up their day March 6 by having a walk at school thanks to the initiative of the state’s Walk to School program this month.
This is the second year for the S.C. Walk to School Day in March organized under the South Carolina Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Day.
Because of the location of Prosperity-Rikard Elementary, it is difficult and not safe for students to walk or bike ride to school. That did not diminish the participation of the students and staff as the morning began with a brisk, group walk around the perimeter of the campus and into the building.
All students and staff, and some parents that volunteered to come walk, met at the front of the school near the school marquee. They all did a walk around the perimeter of the grounds and everyone entered the school through the front doors. It simulated the Walk to School Day that was celebrated across the state.
It was worth the excitement that everyone felt after a morning walk that got everyone energized for the rest of the school day. Many classes walk after lunch each day before beginning their recess period, so the students are used to walking.
Cindy Roy, the physical education teacher, helps students track the miles their classes walk on a map in the PE room. It is just another opportunity to help students get extra exercise and to encourage them to get out and get active at home. Students also participated in the Jump Rope for Heart event at school this past week. The event is sponsored by Roy and supports the American Heart Association.
