NEWBERRY — Middle school math students at Newberry Academy are busy working math problems for the St Jude’s Math-a-thon, an annual event to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

St. Jude was opened by Danny Thomas in 1962. The mission of the hospital is to find cures for children with cancer and other deadly childhood diseases through research and treatment.

St. Jude is the only cancer research center for children where families never have to pay for their hospital bill. Thanks to the help of donors, no child is turned away because a family cannot pay.

Math-a-thon is a fun way to sharpen math skills and help others. Each student works math problems in a booklet for their grade level. They get sponsors to donate money for the problems they have worked. This money goes to St. Jude to help with research and treatment.

Newberry Academy has done the Math-a-thon for several years and has raised over $26,000 for St. Jude. The students are working again this year to make the total even higher.
