NEWBERRY — Despite an eight-save performance by starting goalkeeper Morgan Raffaelle, the Newberry women’s lacrosse team fell 13-3 at home to the visiting Tiffin Dragons on Sunday morning.
Tiffin (1-1) took control of the game early scoring a pair of goals in the opening five minutes, both of which were scored by 2012 Division II Independent Player of the Year Alexandria Quast. With 17:43 remaining in the first half, Quast’s teammate Emily Roussel found the back of the net to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead, forcing a Newberry (3-4) timeout.
Newberry held the Dragons in check for the first five minutes following the timeout, but soon saw Quast line-up for a free position opportunity, which she converted for her third goal of the game. After two more Tiffin goals, the Wolves headed to halftime down by six.
The second half looked like it was going to be all Tiffin, until the draw control at 11:05 following a Tiffin goal. Off that draw control, Newberry junior Kerri Ann Barlage controlled the draw and sprinted toward the Tiffin goal. With only Tiffin keeper Jessica Bombard to beat, Barlage placed a shot past the Dragons’ keeper for her 15th goal of the season.
Tiffin answered Barlage’s strike with two of their own, before freshman Carly Marksberry tallied her tenth goal of the season for the Wolves. Newberry scored a second straight goal with 2:02 remaining as sophomore Tessa Davis fed a pass to freshman Megan Kenny who scored her second goal of the season. Tiffin added a final goal, before the Wolves and Dragons saw time expire with Tiffin on top 13-3.
Barlage, Marksberry and Kenny all recorded a single goal on the day, while Davis recorded Newberry’s lone assist. Barlage led the Wolves with three ground balls, as Davis and freshman Jessica Baxtrom controlled a team high three draws. On the defensive end, freshman Majorie Anderson and sophomore Elise Sanchez caused a pair of turnovers each.
Newberry returns to Setzler Field on Saturday for a 2 p.m. meeting with future South Atlantic Conference opponent Catawba.
