Brandl shoots up leaderboard at classic

KIAWAH ISLAND — An even par 72 in Monday’s second round of action put Lisa Brandl in sixth place individually entering the final round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, just three strokes behind the tournament leaders.

The Newberry Wolves shot a 318 for the day with a few high scores late in the day, and sit in 19th place of 32 teams entering Tuesday’s final round.

Newberry is the only Division II team in the tournament and is fourth of the seven South Carolina schools in the event. The College of Charleston leads the entire tournament at +20, Winthrop is 11th at +48, Wofford is tied for 15th at +54, Newberry is 19th at +57, Presbyterian is 20th at +59, Charleston Southern is 21st at +63 and The Citadel is 30th at +107.

The Wolves’ score went up three strokes from Sunday’s first round, shooting a 30-over par 318 Monday. Brandl’s even par performance tied for the fourth-best score of Monday’s action.

Brandl is at a 4-over par 148 for the tournament so far, just three strokes behind tournament leaders Brooke Bellomy of Campbell, Tracy Martin of Richmond and Julia Neumann of College of Charleston at 1-over. UNC Greensboro’s Fanny Cnops is at 2-over and Harin Lee of St. John’s is at 3-over.

Brandl had three birdies on the front nine and three bogeys on the back nine for a consistent round. She has not had a hole worse than bogey in the tournament so far.

Julia Daneshfar is tied for 48th in the tournament at 12-over par 156 after a 5-over par 77 Monday. Eline Askeland is tied for 79th at 16-over par 160 with an 11-over par 83 today, while Natalia Perez and Korey Coleman are in a tie for 149th, each with a 30-over par 174.

Newberry played Tuesday but the results were not available at press time.
