NEWBERRY — Firefighters from the Newberry and other county fire departments and members of the Lexington County fire service trained last week to be pump operators in a S.C. Fire Academy certified class.

Newberry Fire Chief Keith Minick said the class helped the firefighters understand how to move water in a mobile situation, gave them experience in working with different types of trucks and tankers as well as each other.

Trucks from both the city and county were used in the training, which was held behind the Newberry Plaza.

“Training is a big part of what we do and is ongoing,” said Minick.

He added the training also brings firefighters across the area together and helps them gain experience in working between departments.

Firefighters learned how to determine which form of moving water to use depending on the size of the fire. The exercise also helps the departments maintain the trucks and equipment being used.

The class allowed the departments to document how much water the trucks can move, which helps the insurance service determine the insurance rating in each station’s area.

Local training continued over the weekend on hazardous materials incidents.
