In the Wednesday, Feb. 20 story about Weezie’s store in Prosperity, the owner Elizabeth Mullins is not soliciting donations and is not asking for donations on her storefront, website or Facebook page.

However, while Mullins cannot ask for donations, that does not mean that people cannot give her items because they want to.

Mullins simply took donations from people because they wanted to give away their used items, stated Nancy Williamson with the Small Business Development Center in Newberry.

Williamson spoke with the Secretary of State’s office who states, “She can accept donations, but she cannot solicit for them.”

“The text ‘donations welcome’ was removed from all of her website pages, from her Facebook business page and from her door,” stated Williamson.

Williamson also states this for anyone else interested in starting a business, “People can accept donations but cannot ask or imply that they are asking for them because it is against the Charitable Funds Act 1, code section 33-56-60.”
