Pork in the Park has upped its winnings and there are only a few weeks are left to register for those wanting to be named as the best barbecue master in Newberry.

In the past there have only been seven to 12 teams competing in the Pork in the Park barbecue contest, Newberry Parks, Recreation and Tourism Events Coordinator Bryan Bedenbaugh said.

But this year the Pork in the Park committee hopes to have 21 to 22 teams competing.

And to bring in more teams the city has upped the ante and created more contests.

This year awards will be given for the best chicken, ribs and barbecue. There will also be a grand champion crowned.

The grand champion prize will be awarded to the barbecue team with the highest points in the three meat categories and a $500 prize will be given.

Prizes for each of the meat competitions will be $400 for first place, $250 for second and $125 for third.

The festival had three meat categories in the past but last year the chicken category was eliminated and brought back this year.

“We are working to get the word out and bring in more teams,” said Bedenbaugh.

In addition to the teams being judged by a panel for who is the best, may will have their food available for the crowd to purchase.

This year’s event will also be extended from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Pork in the Park also includes rides and games for children and entertainment.

Registrations for the April 20 Pork in the Park are due in by March 15 to the first 22 teams.
