


NEWBERRY COUNTY — The Newberry County School District recognized all of the Junior Beta and Senior Beta Club winners who placed at conventions this year. All schools were represented at the conventions.
Activities at the convention include academic contests, quiz bowls and talent competitions and members interact and share project ideas enabling them to showcase academic and leadership abilities. Members must have an overall average of 90 and demonstrate excellence in academics, service, character and leadership skills.
The Junior Beta Club includes sixth through ninth graders and the Senior Beta Club includes 10th through 12th graders.
Each club begins preparing at the beginning of the school year and are coached by teachers also known as sponsors.
Whitmire Community
The Whitmire Community Senior Beta Club placed third in the state for scrapbook. This is their sixth consecutive winning scrapbook at the convention. The scrapbook committee consists of chairperson Bethany Cromer, Amy Andrews, Rebecca Glymph and Madison Brock.
Newberry Middle
Marianna Robertson won second place in the spelling contest at the Junior Beta convention.
Newberry High
The following Newberry High students all won awards at the Junior Beta Club convention.
Kennedi Jeter won first place in speech, Justin Busby won second place in sketching, Megan Clark and Sydney Diener won second place in wreath and Clark also won third place in handmade jewelry.
Newberry High also won second place in the arts and crafts sweepstakes at the Senior Beta convention.
Mid-Carolina Middle
Overall, Mid-Carolina Middle placed first in the arts and crafts sweepstakes since they won the most arts and crafts awards.
Grant Mays was elected president of the South Carolina Junior Beta Club and was awarded first place in the campaign speech competition.
Reid Brigman won first place in social studies competition and Erin Werts won first place in black and white photography and second place in digitally enhanced photography.
Rachel Shealy won second place in quilting and Anna Lominick won second place in watercolor.
Catherine Taylor won third place in speech and Taylor Martin won third place in sculpture.
The following students placed third in the group talent: Callie Blanchard, Griff Bowers, Rachel Richardson, Charlsy Traylor, Cameron Stutts and Preston Farmer.
Mid-Carolina High
Mid-Carolina High won third place in the art sweepstakes. Individual awards went to: Maria DeJesus Cervantes for second place in pencil drawing, Meliza Pascual for first place in pen, pencil, or ink sketching, Matalyn Mills for first place in pastels or charcoals and special talent finalist and Katherine Griffith for third place in wreath.
