NEWBERRY — Dondray Walker scored 22 points to lead the Newberry Wolves to a 75-56 victory over the Brevard Tornados in Eleazer Arena on Wednesday night.

Newberry moves to 11-12 overall and 7-8 in the South Atlantic Conference with the win. The Wolves visit Catawba for a 4 p.m. tipoff in Salisbury, N.C., on Saturday. Brevard is now 3-20 overall and 2-13 in the league. The Tornados host Wingate Saturday.

Walker made 5-of-8 three-pointers and commanded the game for the Wolves. Mitch Riggs made three three-pointers on the way to an 18-point performance. Brandon Riley and Demarkus Smith each scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for the scarlet and gray.

For Brevard, Gerel Simmons scored 26 points and Miles Leathers netted 14 points.

Neither team got off to a hot start and the game was tied 5-5 after five and a half minutes of action. Aegir Steinarsson broke the deadlock with a three-pointer and a Walker trey and Smith layup gave Newberry a 13-7 lead. Brevard went on a 7-0 run to take the lead at 14-13 with just over 10 minutes left.

After the game was tied at 16-all with just under nine minutes to go, Newberry went on a 12-point surge with a Walker three-point play and a series of three-pointers from Steinarsson, Walker and Riggs to make it 28-16. The Tornados battled through the half but could get no closer than five points out, which would be the halftime margin as the scarlet and gray took a 35-30 lead into the locker room.

Brevard actually had the higher scooping percentage in the half at 50.0 percent (13-of-26), but the Wolves made six three-pointers to Brevard’s two and made four more free throws as well. Walker had 12 points at the break for Newberry while BC’s Simmons had 16.

A Walker jumper and Riggs three in the first minute and a half of the second period put the Wolves’ lead back at double digits at 40-30. Brevard could get the lead down to seven, but the lead for the Wolves was back to 14 on Walker’s free throws with just under 15 minutes left.

Newberry led 56-43 with 8:40 left and the Tornados had a glimmer of hope before the Wolves went on a 14-2 surge. The Tornados scored one bucket while Newberry saw points from Smith, James Ashby, Riggs and Byron Dickerson. Riggs’ driving layup with five minutes left gave Newberry a 25-point advantage at 70-45. From there, the result was never in doubt and a pair of free throws from Gilbert McGregor provided the final tallies on a 75-56 win.
