NEWBERRY — The South Carolina Independent Schools Association state basketball tournament got under way Friday and Saturday, and both Newberry Academy basketball teams were in action.

Only one team from the independent Newberry schools is moving on, as the Lady Eagles fell 52-20 and the boys’ team won 51-44.

The Lady Eagles dug an early hole and never recovered. Their opponent, Colleton Prep, opened a 16-4 lead by the end of the first period, and never let the Newberry team get untracked.

Late season injury problems that dogged the Lady Eagles unfortunately followed the team to the state tournament. With several starters hurt or hurting, Coach Travis Gilliam had few options from an already thin bench. The team fought hard throughout the game, but they were unable to close the gap on Colleton.

Freshman Andie Getz led the Lady Eagles with 10 points. Emma Lindsay had 5 points on the night, while Kaitlyn Nobles and Newberry’s lone senior, Charlotte Carulli, had two points each.

Carman Franklin had 1 point to round out the scoring.

Gilliam’s young team hopes to build on its 11 -14 record from this year and compete for region and state honors next year.

The Newberry Academy boys are still alive after surviving a first round scare from Coastal Christian.

The Eagles came out flat on both ends of the court, and struggled to a half-time tie, 19-19. In the second half, Newberry looked to pull away, opening a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter. Coastal roared backed, cutting the lead to 5, and they decided to make Newberry earn the game at the free-throw line.

The Eagles uncharacteristically struggled from the line, keeping Coastal’s hopes alive until the game was nearly over. Newberry went 3-12 from the charity stripe in the last two minutes.

The Eagles managed to win, but Coach Scott Gardner said they will need a much better effort to win against their second round opponent, St. Johns Christian, on Tuesday. The Eagles finished with two players in double figures, as Justin Suber and Dylan Skipper finished with 14 points each. Luke Carraway had 9 points and Jacob Epting had 8 points. Ryan Smith and Alex Cole each added 3 points on the night.
