WHITMIRE — Six churches in the Whitmire community are celebrating the 40 days of Lent in their 11th annual Lenten series.
On Wednesday, the first service began at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy Lutheran on South Main Street where members and other Whitmire residents gathered for an Ash Wednesday service and fellowship.
St. Timothy’s interim pastor John Weaver led the congregation through many prayers and this year an ongoing dialogue between two people will tell the story about Jesus Christ as a servant.
Each church will have two people play out the dialogue which was written by Don Neidigk and published by Creative Communications for the Paris out of Fenton, Mo.
The dialogue goes back and forth between a pastor and Izzy who discuss lessons learned in Isaiah. While the message is serious, there is comedic dialogue interspersed throughout and plenty of Biblical passages referenced.
As for the Ash Wednesday service, Weaver opted against doing the traditional ashes on the forehead since not all churches do this. Instead, he focused on the lesson, prayers and worship.
The participating churches in the series are St. Timothy, First Baptist of Whitmire, Heritage Wesleyan, Whitmire Methodist, Nehemiah Pavilion and Sims Chapel Baptist.
All types of people are brought together within the community which Weaver said is a strong point.
“I look forward to the fellowship from the different churches getting together. It’s not just Lutheran, Presbyterian, Church of God, etc.,” said Whitmire resident Roya Smith. “I suppose that’s how it should be.”
Smith, a third generation Lutheran, said her grandmother came from Germany.
Three sisters from around the county also enjoy celebrating Lent together.
From Nehemiah Pavilion, Pastor Emma Ruff enjoys the community coming together for Lent.
“We come together and it’s such a sweetness for the different denominations to come together as children of God,” said Ruff.
The Lenten series continues at 11 a.m. next Wednesday at First Baptist of Whitmire and ends on Easter Sunday with an early worship in the Whitmire cemetery.

• March 20: 11 a.m. Sims Chapel Baptist
• March 28: 7 p.m. St. Timothy Lutheran, Maundy Thursday Communion
• March 29: noon Good Friday Cross Walk begins in Whitmire Presbyterian parking lot
• March 29: 7 p.m. Whitmire Methodist Good Friday worship service
• March 31: 7 a.m. Early Easter worship service in the Whitmire cemetery
