NEWBERRY — The Newberry High Lady Bulldogs saw their 2012-13 season come to a close Tuesday night in the Scott Gym as a ferocious second half rally fell a point short in a 43-42 loss to Landrum.

The Lady Cardinals never trailed as they got all 16 of their first quarter points from the field, while Newberry went 4-of-six from the free-throw line for their only points in the opening eight minutes of play.

Playing very aggressively on both sides of the court, Landrum scored four more field shots in the second quarter, as opposed to Newberry’s two, as they led 25-8 at the break.

Like in the first quarter, Landrum got all of its third quarter points from the field, but Newberry cut a 17-point deficit at the half into trailing by 12 going into the final eight minutes of play with momentum seeming to fall on Newberry’s side.

Newberry called a time out with 4:01 left in the game and trailing by five, 41-36.

Eighteen seconds later, Landrum would be called for five seconds, giving the ball to Newberry.

With 97 seconds left in the game and trailing by two points, Landrum threw the ball out of bounds, giving the ball back to the Lady Bulldogs.

Newberry was unable to score until there were 11.2 seconds left when Octavia Grandy missed her first free throw but made the second for the 43-42 score. Landrum turned the ball over to Newberry three seconds later.

Newberry’s potential game-winning shot fell short as Landrum was able to retain possession of the rebound to preserve the victory.

Grandy had a game-high 21 points for Newberry. Arnasia Boyd scored eight while Tyshira Bates finished with seven.

Fatima Sims finished with four points in the second half while the Newberry scoring ended with the two points of Breanna Mathis.

Newberry ends its season with a 12-9 record as they went 10-2 during the 2013 calendar year, including going 9-1 to win the regional championship.
