HARTSVILLE — Newberry lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision in the early game before coming back to win the second game 5-3 and split a doubleheader with the Coker Cobras on Sunday afternoon. The Wolves, whose record for the season now stands at 6-2, will have five days off before returning to action Saturday in a home doubleheader against North Greenville.

Saturday Game One: Coker 5, Newberry 4

Newberry broke a seventh-inning tie to take a 4-3 lead before seeing Coker add two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-4 decision.

Leadoff hitter Gabby Bedard began the game in style for the Wolves with a triple, then came in to score on a Danielle Basch sacrifice fly. Coker took the lead in the third inning, using a single, a double, and an groundout to score two runs. A bases-loaded walk an inning later gave the Cobras a 3-1 advantage.

Bedard and Basch led off the sixth inning with singles, then came in to score on a two-RBI single by Brittany Phillips. In the following inning, Newberry appeared poised to take the win as an error on the pitcher allowed Casey Nellums to come in to score. But a pair of Wolves errors coupled with two Coker singles in the bottom of the frame gave the Cobras the 5-4 win.

A day after earning a win in a ten-inning complete game, Kaylyn Camacho allowed three runs on four hits in four innings of work, striking out eight.

Game Two: Newberry 5, Coker 3

Bedard followed up her two-hit performance in the early game by going 3-for-4 in Game Two to lead the Wolves to a 5-3 win. Bedard came in to score twice during the game, including the go-ahead run in a three-run seventh inning for the Wolves.

The Cobras scored single runs in the first and second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Newberry left five runners on base through the first four innings before finally breaking through in the fifth with Bedard and Katie Capobianco coming in to score after a Danielle Basch flyout to center field.

In the seventh, a Bedard single followed by two bunt singles loaded the bases with no outs in a tied game. A ground ball by Summer Bartek allowed the Wolves to take the lead, then a Leah Hosking triple with two outs brought in two more runs. Coker added a single run in the bottom of the frame, but Shelley Jeffcoat induced a ground ball with two runners on to end the game and seal the victory.

Jeffcoat pitched her second complete game in as many days after going eight innings in yesterday’s extra-innings win, pitching around nine hits to hold the Cobras to three runs.

A pair of extra-innings walk-off hits were the difference in Saturday’s doubleheader against Limestone as Newberry swept the twinbill to move to 5-1 on the season.

Saturday Game One: Newberry 3, Limestone 2 (10 innings)

Camacho pitched her third complete game of the season, this time a 10-inning affair, to stymie Limestone and lead the Wolves to a win in the first game of the afternoon.

Camacho allowed six hits and two runs, one earned, in her ten innings of work, striking out four Saints hitters.

The game was tied at one run after seven innings. Each team scored a single run in the ninth, as Newberry used a muffed throw by the second baseman to score Capobianco to counter a Saints’ sacrifice fly in the top of the frame.

Jennifer Yancey paced the Wolves offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate. She doubled in the fifth inning, but saved her biggest hit of the afternoon for the third extra frame.

By rule, Basch was placed on second base to begin the tenth inning. She moved to third on a fielding error by the second baseman that allowed batter Phillips to reach second base. Yancey stepped to the plate with two outs after an illegal substitution and a strikeout. She drilled a 1-1 pitch to left field, driving Basch home and setting off a mob at home plate.

Saturday Game Two: Newberry 3, Limestone 2 (8 innings)

Jeffcoat improved her record to 3-0 after pitching her third complete game of the season, striking out five batters and allowing two runs, neither of them earned, on five hits.

Shortstop Phillips had a spectacular game, scoring the winning run in walk-off fashion and going 2-for-3 at the plate. After both teams traded second-inning runs, Phillips gave Newberry a 2-1 lead in the two innings later. She drilled a 1-0 pitch to right field that was just out of reach of a lunging right fielder and rolled all the way to the wall. Phillips was able to score on the play, hitting the Smith Road Complex’s first home run in inside-the-park fashion.

Limestone appeared poised to take the lead in the seventh inning before stellar defense saved the day for the Wolves. A muffed throw, two singles, and a hit batsman tied the game at two and left the bases loaded with just one out. Limestone’s Kirstyn Burleson sent a sharply hit ground ball right at Wolves’ second baseman Basch. Basch scooped up the grounder and threw home to catcher Darrian Jamison, who threw to first baseman Paigh Bruh to complete the 4-2-3 double play and end the inning.

Newberry again leaned on its defense in the eighth inning. With one out and a runner on third, Paige Bolding lifted a fly ball to Bedard in center field. Bedard came up throwing and nailed the runner at the plate, ending the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, Phillips sacrificed Basch to third base. After the second out of the inning, Leah Hosking hit a sharp grounder past the shortstop and into left field, bringing Basch home and securing the Wolves’ second extra-innings win of the day.
