Wolves earn 9-0 tennis victory at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. — For the second straight match, the Newberry women’s tennis team swept their competition in a 9-0 trouncing of the Belmont Abbey Crusaders at the Sacred Hearts Courts on Sunday afternoon.

Doubles play went the Wolves (2-2) way early as Newberry earned an 8-0 victory at No. 3 with Shannon McManus and Marina Ziehe walking away with the victory. The Crusaders (0-2) were no match at No. 1 or No. 2 doubles either, as Susana Aguirre and Romina Adum earned an 8-4 win at No. 1, while at No. 2 Ariel Strong and Tara Lamers picked up an 8-2 win of their own.

Singles action saw a perfect match at No. 6 as McManus won 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5 Lamers picked up a victory in straight sets dropping only two games, Ziehe also earned her victory in only two sets dropping one game in each set.

Both Strong and Adum picked up victories after dropping only one game each. The toughest challenge came at No. 1, but Aguirre controlled the first set before winning a tightly contested second set over her opponent.

Newberry opens its home schedule on Tuesday as the Wolves play host to North Georgia at 2 p.m.

Wolves dominant in 9-0 victory at Converse

SPARTANBURG — In dominating fashion the Newberry women’s tennis team toppled the Converse Valkyries 9-0 at the Converse Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves (1-2) battled through doubles action as Converse (0-2) created a pair of tough challenges at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 Newberry’s pairing of Aguirre and Adum earned an 8-6 victory, while at No. 2 Strong and Lamers picked up a 9-7 win.

McManus and Ziehe dominated their opponents for an 8-0 victory.

Singles action saw four matches in which the Wolves did not surrender a single game to their opponents as Adum, Ziehe, Lamers and McManus each earned a pair of 6-0 set victories. Aguirre and Strong picked up straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
