Brown wins 184-pound class at Newberry Open

NEWBERRY — The Newberry College wrestling program hosted the largest Newberry Open yet, with Mitch Brown winning the championship in the 184-pound weight class.

Brown won his bracket with a 4:36 fall over The Citadel’s Tom Scerbo, an 11-1 major decision over Limestone’s David Keita and a 15-0 technical fall at the 4:00 mark over teammate T.J. Cayruth. In the finals, he won a 9-0 major decision over Chattanooga’s John Shrader. Jared Holliday won third place in the 184-pound bracket.

In the 133-pound bracket, Nick Lankford claimed runner-up honors. He earned a pinfall of North Carolina’s Matthew Williams at the 3:20 mark, a 9-6 decision over Chattanooga’s Alex Ward and a 4-3 decision in the semifinals over Gardner-Webb’s Tyler Ziegler. In the finals, he dropped a 7-5 decision to Limestone’s Ross Benzel.

At 174 pounds, Joe Pittman earned runner-up honors. He took a 20-3 technical fall over Truett-McConnell’s Robert Cagle, pinned The Citadel’s Jared Hemmings at the 2:47 mark and advanced to the finals with a 4-2 decision over Cumberland’s Ezekiel Hunt in the semifinals. He lost the championship bout in a 12-6 decision to Chattanooga’s Levi Clemons.
