NEWBERRY — Matt Gaine hit an RBI single to center in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Newberry Wolves a 7-6 win over the West Alabama Tigers and complete a four-game series sweep at the Smith Road Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Newberry is now 4-0 on the year, with West Alabama falling to 0-4. Newberry plays at Coker at 3 p.m. Tuesday and at No. 7 Francis Marion at 3 p.m. Wednesday before heading to No. 3 Mount Olive for a three-game series next Saturday and Sunday.
The game was a pitcher’s duel early until Newberry put up the first run in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Kirby led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout and brought home on an RBI single by Anthony Siler to make it 1-0.
The Tigers took the lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Mitch Holgate, a two-run double by Chris Kilpatrick and an RBI single by Joel Murphy. A run scored from first on an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt in the top of the fifth to give UWA a 5-1 lead in the middle of that frame.
The Wolves came back to cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run pinch hit double by D.J. Roberts and an RBI bunt single from Siler to cut the lead to 5-4.
UWA added a run in the eighth when Murphy was walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch to make the Wolves’ comeback prospects harder.
After a 1-2-3 eighth inning, the Wolves scratched across two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Roberts reached on second on an error with one out and a Wesley Camp walk put the tying run on base. Siler was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ryan Cranmer drew a walk to plate one. Camp scored on a wild pitch to extend the game.
Both teams had chances to score in the 10th and 11th, but the Wolves capitalized. Albert Baur led off the 12th with a single, moved to second on a JoJo Bradley walk and scored the game winning run on Gaine’s hard-hit single to center.
Baur was 2-for-5 in the game, while Roberts and Siler each had two RBIs. Cole Cromer moved his record to 1-0 on the season pitching a scoreless frame in the top of the 12th.
Saturday Game One: Newberry 15, West Alabama 1
Starter Jonathan Rosenberger avoided a couple of early jams and went six innings without allowing a run and the offense rewarded him by scoring in the first five innings to cruise to a 15-1 win.
Cranmer opened the offense with a two-out triple in the first inning and a hard-hit double by Eric Barbieri gave the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.
The Wolves loaded the bases in the second inning on a single by Jermale Paige, a walk by Chas Goodwin and a single from Camp. Siler roped a single to center to start the scoring parade.
Vogel brought home a run when he was hit by a pitch, making it a 3-0 Newberry lead.
Cranmer broke the game wide open with a bases-clearing three-run triple and was brought home on a Barbieri sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-0. After a double by Baur, Brandan Sheridan hit an RBI single to cap a seven-run inning.
Goodwin led off the bottom of the third with a single and a Camp double put a runner in scoring position. Siler’s sacrifice fly made it a 9-0 game.
The big innings weren’t done, as the Wolves scored four in the bottom of the fourth. Consecutive singles from Baur, Sheridan and Paige loaded the bases and a Goodwin groundout brought one run home, while a Camp triple plated two. Camp scored when Vogel reached on an error and made it a 13-0 lead.
Baur led off the fifth with a triple and a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Bradley pushed Newberry’s lead to 14-0.
UWA got on the board for the first time in the seventh inning on Jack Cockrum’s sacrifice fly.
The Wolves answered when Albert Baur scored on an error in the bottom of the frame.
Baur led the Wolves at the plate, going 4-of-6 and scoring four runs. Camp went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Cranmer went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs and Paige went 2-for-3 two runs.
Rosenberger moved to 1-0 on the season, allowing only four hits and striking out five and walking only one.
Saturday Game Two: Newberry 12, West Alabama 4
Barbieri hit his first homer in a Newberry uniform to help power the Wolves in another big win in the nightcap.
After the Wolves’ defense turned a double play to get Camp out of a jam in the first, Newberry’s offense had a two-out rally capped by a two-run double to left by Baur.
UWA scored a run in the top of the second when Holgate scored on an error, but the Wolves responded when Paige was hit by a pitch and stole second. Bradley blasted a triple to right and was able to score when the cutoff man overthrew his target, putting the Wolves’ lead at 4-1.
The Tigers pulled to within one run on an RBI single from Holgate and Jocobby Robinson’s bases loaded hit by pitch in the third.
Newberry put up four runs in the third on an RBI single from Paige, a bloop RBI single by Gaine and a two-RBI fielder’s choice by Bradley to make it 8-3.
After West Alabama’s Josh Podoris hit an RBI single in the fourth, a one-run single by Cranmer was followed by Barbieri’s three-run blast into the pond beyond the left field fence to put the cap on a great offensive day for the Wolves.
Baur was 3-for-4 with two runs and a run scored, while Bradley was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Barbieri drove in three runs and scored three runs.
Will Robbins got the win on the mound with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three strikeouts on three hits. Starter Camp allowed four runs — three earned — on six hits, walking five and striking out two.
