NEWBERRY — Newberry County was spared when strong storms swept across the area Wednesday although more than an inch of rain was reported in some areas of the county.

Sheriff Lee Foster said that a few trees were blown down during the storm.

Debra Shaw, spokesperson for Newberry Electric Cooperative, said they had scattered outages throughout the night but nothing major until around 9 p.m. when power supplier Santee Cooper had a tree fall on a line.

The down tree affected three of NEC’s substations that serve the area surrounding the City of Newberry, Highway 76 toward Prosperity and the co-ops service area in the Long Lane section of Highway 121. Around 3,000 people were without power.

The City of Newberry only had two blinks with its power system. “More aggressive tree trimming produced good results for us last night. No outages,” said City Manager Jeff Shacker.

The Town of Prosperity did not have any power outages until Thursday morning, Town Manager Karen Livingston said.

Around 6:30 a.m. Thursday a tree fell on a power line and knocked out power to the Brown Street, Williams Wood and Conifer Drive area. Power was restored at 7:20 a.m.
