NEWBERRY — A section of Wilson Road near Dixie Drive will be rezoned after a thumbs up from Newberry City Council.

The stone house at 661 Wilson Road has been up for sale and a retailer is interested in the property. But for the deal to go through the real estate agent asked city council for the property to be rezoned to general commercial.

When city leaders started researching the request they found the property in the area that includes Domino’s Pizza, AES Mini Warehouses, Wilson Marine and Farmer’s Mutual all were not zoned correctly and had a limited industrial zoning.

So the city decided to rezone all the properties, which includes other vacant lots.

During a public hearing Domino’s owner Greg Woods asked for the specific use of the property because Domino’s bylaws say the store can not be located near some establishment such as a liquor store or a store that sold porn.

Newberry Mayor Foster Senn told Woods that he believes the new store would have landscaping and agricultural supplies.

Council then was questioned if the new zoning would change the tax rate and they said it would not.

The council members then gave approval for the second and final reading for the zoning request.
