The Newberry Rotary Club also recognizes teachers every month. This month, they recognized two Whitmire Community School teachers who are also the teachers of the year. Rita Baker, left, teaches first grade and was honored as the elementary school teacher. Laverne Brocke teaches English and journalism as well as sponsors other clubs and activities. Both teachers are Whitmire High graduates and wanted to come back to their school to teach in the Whitmire community, according to Whitmire Community principal Joey Haney.
