MYRTLE BEACH — Two Mid-Carolina students traveled to Myrtle Beach on Saturday to compete for the 2012 South Carolina Farm Bureau talent competition. Josie Moore and Matalyn Mills were chosen during the local Farm Bureau talent contest held in conjunction with the annual Newberry County Farm Bureau member meeting in August to represent the Newberry ladies committee at the state event.
Moore is 12-years-old and the daughter of Rhonda and Eric Moore of Pomaria. She is in the seventh grade at Mid-Carolina Middle School where she is active in the chorus program. She is also a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church where she participates with the youth group. Moore aspires to study ballet at Julliard in New York City after graduation. In preparation of her dreams, Moore is now a member of the Newberry Ballet Guild under the artistic direction of Kendyl Griffith and Lane Henderson. She also takes jazz under Lane Henderson and travels to Artistic Edge in Greenville to prepare for the future endeavors. Moore chose a lyrical /jazz routine choreographed by herself and cousin, Corbyn Fulmer, for the competition.
Matalyn Mills is 15-years-old, is the daughter of Christy White Mills of Prosperity and Mark Mills of Big Bear City, Calif. She is a freshman at Mid-Carolina where she is an active member of the Junior Beta Club and drama club. Mills enjoys competing in beauty pageants and dancing. She currently holds many festival titles from around South Carolina and is the reigning 2012 Elegant Miss Palmetto State and the 2013 Teen Miss South Carolina World Universal queen. However Mills’s one true love is dance. Mills is a member of the TNT show tap team under the instruction of Christy White-Mills, the Junior Jazz Piazza competition team under the instruction of Jill Griffin Riebe, and the Junior Southern Star competition clogging team under the instruction of Shay Griffin Dube. Mills also takes lyric ballet with Lane Henderson and will represent Griffin School of Dance in the solo division for the 2013 dance competition season with both a tap and jazz routines choreographed by owner/instructor Jill Griffin Riebe. Matalyn is also a student instructor for Griffin School of Dance where she teaches the 2-year-old class of creative movement and assist with the TNT Dynamite competition tap team. Mills competed a clogging routine to Scotty McCreery’s “Walk in the Country” that she choreographed herself.
Moore and Mills are both dance students at Griffin School of Dance and have plans of trying out for the South Carolina Governor’s School of the Arts summer program.
During the 2012 State Farm Bureau talent competition both of these young ladies placed in the top three of their prospective groups during the preliminary round held Saturday afternoon.
They then re-competed at 8 p.m. in the evening for final placement.
Moore finished third in the Junior II division and Mills finished second in the Senior I division for the Newberry Farm Bureau.
An impressive note was that of all the counties represented at the competition Newberry and Lexington counties were the only two counties that had representation in both junior and senior finals.
The local and state level talent competition is hosted by the Farm Bureau ladies committee, prospectively. Moore and Mills’s families encourage everyone to find out more about the Farm Bureau program.
