NHS takes on Vikings

NEWBERRY — Not since Newberry High welcomed Dutch Fork High about eight years ago have any of the “Big 16” schools in the state stepped foot in the Scott Gym, but Spartanburg did just that Friday as the Vikings split their double-header with the Bulldogs.

The Lady Vikings never trailed in their 68-43 victory as the Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-1 on the season.

Spartanburg had 30 field shots, including one three pointer, while Newberry made all 18 of their field shots from inside the arc.

Tyshira Bates was the lone Lady Bulldog to score in each of the four quarters as she finished with 14 points.

Octavia Grandy also ended in double digits as she had 11 points, which all came in the final three quarters of play.

Arnasia Boyd finished with eight points; Fatima Sims scored six while the Newberry scoring ended with the four points of Breanna Mathis.

The Newberry boys picked up its second straight win of the season as the Bulldogs took the lead for good in the second quarter in their 79-70 victory.

Spartanburg converted four-of-seven free-throws on the night while Newberry went 9-of-15 from the charity stripe, including going 7-of-11 in the fourth quarter alone from there.

Kaheem Praylow had an evening high 27 points, including getting all 11 of his field shots inside the three point arc.

Jalin Alexander scored 14 while Trey Miller scored 12 points, including an evening-high three shots from behind the arc.

Bennett Wilson scored eight points while both Notorious Booker and Jeremy Summers scored seven points apiece.

The Bulldog scoring ended with the four points of Jalin Lindsay.

Newberry will hit the road for the next four games as they will travel to Spartanburg this Friday and to Fairfield Central on Saturday.
