The annual Newberry Soil and Water Conservation District had their annual awards and affiliate banquet Tuesday evening.
The guest speaker was Dr. Buz Kloot, the research associate professeor and associate director of the School of Earth, Ocean and Environment Earth Sciences and Resources Institute at the University of South Carolina.
Koot said that each year in the United States, we lose 6.6 trillion tons of soil a year due to erosion and other circumstances.
Honorees during the evening included:
• Hodge Harmon, who has served as vice-chairman and as the local representative on the East Piedmont Resources Conservation and Development Countil for his seven years of dedicated service prior to his retirement.
• Also honored were the the charter members of the Keep Newberry County Beautiful Board including Laura Dukes, Doug Heydt, Sheri Scott, Kim Griffith, Cindy Schumpert, Julia Hamilton and Annette Davis.
The 2012 Accomplishment Award Winners included:
• Steve and Joyce Barrow, for their dedication to the Salkehatchie Summer Service Phoenix Camp.
• Walt Richardson and students of Mid-Carolina High School for their breathe better campaign and school recycling program.
• Nancy Graham Riggin, a teacher at Little Mountain Elementary, for her individual recycling initiative and beautification program.
• Dr. Charles Horn and the Green Team at Newberry College Recycling Initiative and campus beautification program.
• The District Award Education and Public Outreach Award went to the the committee of the Newberry Ag Expo, as they were represented by Lisa Sligh and Julie Hamm, co-chairs.
• The final award of the night went to Mike Meetze, the winner of the Willie B. Piester Conservationist of the Year. Mike, along with his wife Lucy Anne and their four sons have planted over 300,000 trees as a family.
The Camp Conservation will be held at Lynch’s Woods during the week of July 8-11. All youth interested in attending are asked to get in touch with Davis at the conservation office on Kendall Road or by calling 276-1978.
