MACLEAN, Va. — Newberry College’s A.J. Booker, Lequawn James and Ben Trotter have been named 2012 Division II football Capital One Academic All-District as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

All three student-athletes advance to the ballot for Academic All-America status, which will be announced in early December.

James earns Academic All-District honors for the third time in his career, while Booker and Trotter earn Academic All-District laurels for the first time.

James, a senior on the field from North, adds to an impressive list of credentials. He graduated in May 2012 from Newberry’s nursing program as part of just the second class of Newberry nurses. He was a national semifinalist for the National Football Foundation’s Campbell trophy in 2011 and was Academic All-District in 2009 and 2011. He has started at various positions on the Wolves’ offensive line for four seasons. He has been named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll, the Newberry College Dean’s List and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Christians Living Among You and the Metoka Galeda Choir.

Booker, a sophomore from Spartanburg, earns Academic All-District honors in his first season of eligibility for the award. This season he has 24 tackles with a season high of seven at Tusculum, three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, a sack and an interception at Mars Hill. In addition to his honors on the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Newberry College Dean’s List, he has also logged community service at Newberry College’s “Shop Around the Corner” thrift store.

Trotter, a sophomore from Batesburg-Leesville, earns his first Academic All-District honor. He has found a home on the field at defensive end and has 12 tackles on the season, forcing a fumble in the season opener against Elizabeth City State. He is a two-time honoree on the Newberry College Dean’s List, has been on the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll, served as a resident adviser for one year and has been part of a group reading the new “Scar, The Helpful Wolf” children’s book to elementary school students in Newberry County.

For Division II, the Academic All-District honors are broken up by the four Super Regions used for playoff qualification. Wingate had six student-athletes named Academic All-District, while Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry and UNC Pembroke each had three honorees.

Newberry had three of the 11 student-athletes from schools in South Carolina honored as Academic All-District and is the only Palmetto State school with more than two honorees. Clemson, The Citadel and Wofford had two honorees apiece while Benedict and South Carolina each had one honoree.
