NEWBERRY – Jeff Duncan and Mick Mulvaney got big wins for a second term in Congress, while David Stumbo was elected to serve his first term as the Eighth Circuit solicitor.
Duncan won in Newberry County over Democratic challenger Brian Ryan Doyle by 1,825 votes to 1,078 or 63 percent in the Third Congressional heat.
The Republican incumbent had 67.7 percent of the votes in the district at press time and had been projected as the winner.
Mulvaney got the nod for the Fifth Congressional District both in Newberry County and the district with 6,891 votes in Newberry County or 56 percent compared to Democratic challenger Joyce Knotts who got 5,481 votes. Mulvaney was also leading the district at press time.
Stumbo faced opposition from Newberry attorney Ben Shealy after defeating Solicitor Jerry Peace in the Republican Primary.
Shealy garnered 7,872 votes in Newberry compared to Stumbo’s 7,797.
At press time Stumbo had a 62 percent lead in the circuit with 58 percent of the polls reporting.
Also, the statewide amendment to allow the governor and lieutenant governor to run on the same ticket won locally 7,919 to 7,367.
