Congratulations to the Newberry High School Blue Brigade for their sixth place finish at the S.C. Band Directors Association 2A Upper-State championships. They qualified for the 2A state championship along with the top eight from upper and lower state. This is the first time since 2006 that they have qualified for the state championship. Also, the Blue Brigade placed 16th at the 2A State Marching Band Competition this past Saturday at Spring Valley High School. It’s the first time in six years that the Blue Brigade has qualified and Newberry is so proud of what they have accomplished this year. The band would like to thank all the parents, students, teachers, staff and community for the encouragement and the support.

Newberry High’s staff member of the month is Renee Long. Long is the cafeteria manager.

Newberry High congratulates the students of the month for October. They are freshman, Alexus Ellis; sophomore, Zaqueena Williams; junior, Amber Meadow and senior, Jamie Fulmer.

Newberry High football players Eric Gallman and Trahjare Reeder were selected to play in the 2012 Shrine Bowl. The Shrine Bowl game is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious high school all-star football game in America. Players are selected by the Shrine Bowl coaches and announced in October. Each team has 44 players. The 76th Shrine Bowl game will be played on Dec. 15 in Gibbs Stadium at Wofford College in Spartanburg. The Shrine Bowl game will kick off at 1 p.m.

Savannah Roberts was selected to the 35th Annual CAWS Volleyball All Star Team. Forty-eight players are selected from across the state to make up four teams of 12 players. These players are selected by either being voted on by the state volleyball coaches or being selected by the all-star coach. Roberts will play for the 1A/2A North team who will compete against the 1A/2A South team at Erskine College on Nov. 17 at 9 am.

The Teacher of the Month at Newberry High is Mary O’Dell. O’Dell teaches English 4 and AP English literature, sponsors The National Honor Society, and is also very involved in NHS’s Pink Out each year in October to raise breast cancer awareness.
