PROSPERITY — Howard Garrett Lipscomb of 81 Howard Lipscomb Drive, Prosperity, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at his residence.

Born on Nov. 13, 1925 in Gaffney, he was a son of the late Howard and Mabel Armstrong Lipscomb.

Garrett graduated from Newberry High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy as a submariner during World War II with commendation. He worked as a certified electrician and was a member of IBEW for 61 years. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Hartford Club and was a longstanding member of Zion United Methodist Church serving in the Men’s Club. He volunteered with Meal on Wheels for many years.

Mr. Lipscomb is survived by his loving wife, Inge Crayne Lipscomb; stepson, Michael T. Crayne of Prosperity; sisters, Juanita L Beltz (Lonnie) of Chester; and Mary Carroll L. Halfacre of Newberry; brother, Tommy Lipscomb (Zoila) of Prosperity; and sisters-in-law, Mary Owens Lipsomb of Newberry and Willie Mae Lipscomb of Prosperity.

He was predeceased by brothers, Broadus Theodore Lipscomb and Eugene Lee Lipscomb and brother-in-law Coleman Halfacre.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at Zion United Methodist Church by Rev. David Taylor and Rev. Beth Drennen. Interment with military honors will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry from 5 to 7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Ron Halfacre, Robert Lipscomb, Kirksey Koon, John Beltz, and Adam, Matthew and Nathan Templin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Oscar Lovelace, Dr. Michael Bernardo, Dr. Chip Dixon, Doug Templin, Bill Lyles, Thomas Hawkins, Joe L. Poole and the staff of Hospice Care of Tri-County.
