WINGATE, N.C. - Newberry freshman Lucas Ferreira scored his first collegiate goal on Wednesday at Wingate, but the Brazilian’s strike was not enough as the Bulldogs rallied for a 2-1 victory at the WU Soccer Complex.

After neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening half, the Wolves (2-4-1, 0-2-1 SAC) struck in the opening minute of the second half as Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) hit a low shot by Wingate’s keeper for the first goal of his career.

The Wolves held onto the lead until in the 65th minute freshman Garrett Sims (West Columbia) handled a shot that was on frame from Wingate (6-1, 3-0) and was shown a red card. The red card also saw Wingate receive a penalty kick, which they converted to tie the game at 1-1.

Wingate added a game winner in the 84th minute, on a headed shot from Peron Da Silva.

Newberry goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt posted six saves in the loss to Wingate.

The Wolves return home on Saturday to play host to Lenoir-Rhyne at 4 p.m.
