If anyone believes the special teams on a football team are not important, they needed to be at the Mid-Carolina vs. Chapman game Friday nigh.

This game had a total of 76 points scored by both teams, with the most important three points being scored with 11.4 seconds left in the game.

Chapman scored the first touchdown in less than three minutes into the first quarter and again within the first minute of the second quarter, making the score Chapman 14 and MC 0 .

MC quickly began to answer them with a 35 yard run from Nick Sims-Metts setting up a touchdown by Khalil Kennedy as he stretched the ball across the goal line.

After the 2 point conversion, it is now Chapman 14 to MC 8.

After Chapman put one in the uprights adding three points, the kickoff to MC was returned by Javarius Nelson for an 80 yard touchdown run followed by another two point conversion, making this a football game now with only a point separating them.

MC held Chapman and forced a punt, which Javarius Nelson took to the end zone with another 80 yard return.

Just before the half, Chapman scored again with the half time score leaving Chapman on top with 24 and MC 22.

The second half was a defensive battle, but MC’s Khalil Kennedy made it to the end zone again but Chapman answered quickly with a touchdown of their own.

Nick Sims-Metts brought the scoring in the 3rd quarter to a close with a 45 yard run, putting MC on top at the beginning of the fourth quarter, 36 to 31.

The fourth quarter was even more of a defensive battle with both teams punting back and forth, but with only 1:57 left in the game, Chapman scored taking the lead and MC had less than two minutes to make something happen. S

core was now Chapman 37 MC 36.

MC drove hard and made it to the 18 yard line with less than 15 seconds to go and Dillon Pelton, still injured from the White Knoll game, put a 28 yard field goal through the uprights to bring the score to MC 39 Chapman 37.

Chapman had 11 seconds to try to add points on the board, but on the first drive after the kickoff, MC’s determined defense forced a fumble that was recovered by MC’s RJ Boyd.

With MC’s quarterback, Matthew Hawkins taking a knee the celebration began as victory was sealed for the Rebels.

Again, special teams played a huge part in this game, with kick return, punt return and the kicking team putting about half the points on the board for MC.

Proven by this game, special teams are an important part of the game, sometimes more important than others.

Great victory MC, keep up the good work.

The MC Rebels will be at home this week hosting homecoming with the Chapin Eagles, time for another win guys.
