An Irmo man was killed after hitting a tree in a wreck on S.C. Highway 773 on Saturday evening.

Michael Eugene Snipes, 58, of Irmo, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single vehicle wreck that occurred around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Snipes was traveling north in a 2007 Chevy pickup when he ran off the right side of the road and hit a culvert. The truck then went across the road away, off the left side of the road and hit a tree, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Corporal Brent Kelly.

Snipes was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle, according to reports.

Newberry County Deputy Coroner Melody Martin said Snipes died due to blunt force trauma.

Snipes worked for an air-conditioning company out of Columbia.

The wreck is being investigated by the S.C. Highway Patrol and the Newberry County Coroner’s Office.
