Whitmire Town Council has made significant progress towards a new water bill computer system.

On Monday, the council discussed the final touches on how the bill would run for its town residents.

The town is using an outside computer source, Harris Global Software, out of Statesville, Ga. which will allow for quicker and more efficient service to the residents.

While the system is not up and running yet,the town is hopeful that by mid-October, it will be up and running.

Harris Global Software will print the water bills for the town for two years and is costing the town $7,500 annually.

The town will be charged for a minimum of 900 bills per month and if they need to pay extra, they will pay the difference. They originally had 1,000 but the company will charge the town more if they do not produce a minimum of 1,000 a month. So they decided to redo the contract for 900 and pay any extra if needed which is less than risk coming under 1,000.

The town will still have important billing information on the bill but the system will be more efficient for the town.

Recreation

Council member Chrystal Harsha says that football registration for the young boys is going well and reported that the midget group of 10-12 year olds has 13 kids while the mites and flag football teams still need players.

Harsha says that the midgets would not combine with the younger teams because of the size of the older players.

Harsha also said that there are not a lot of cheerleaders and the recreation department still needs young girls to cheer.

The town has still not hired a recreation director and will wait towards the end of the year. Until then, Harsha is in charge.

The town would most likely hire a part-time director as this was budgeted for.

In other news, Harsha also says that she spoke with the Municipal Association’s Scott Slaton who will come speak about zoning.

The town will have a special meeting Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Whitmire Community Center to discuss zoning issues.

Town jobs

The council also briefly discussed the vacancy for a commercial driver for the town for the public works department. The town has advertised the job and also have the job listed at the unemployment office.

Council member Cassie Fowler has approached newspapers about advertising and approached council with rates.

While the town wants and needs to hire someone, the public works director has not seen too many qualified applicants.

The person may apply for their CDL license within six months.

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply.

Halloween

Fall is approaching and the town is preparing for another town Halloween night.

The council set Halloween night on Oct. 27 on Main Street in Whitmire where there will be games, fun and a trunk or treat. More details will come together as Halloween approaches.

Whitmire Jaycees

Fowler did bring up the fact that the Whitmire Jaycees will have a stomp meeting on Oct. 23 at the community center at 6:30 p.m

This is a chance for candidates to meet the residents and ask any questions they may have.
