It's still wrapped in red construction ribbon in some places, but the $4.5 million gift of a new library, largely from the county's penny sales tax referendum, won't be opened until Christmas or later.
“That's going to be up to (County Librarian) Tucky (Taylor),” said County Project Manager Ervin West at Thursday's library tour. “December or maybe into January.”
The new 22,000 square foot Friend Street library will replace the current 7,000 square foot building adding efficient handicapped access and new amenities.
Taylor says one of her favorite rooms in the new building is the South Carolina historical room.
The library's current historic state section is limited to a table, but Tucker says even that draws tourists.
“This is what generates a lot of tourism for Newberry,” said Tucker. “We have (visitors coming) every day.”
