• American Legion Post 193 and Post Adjutant William Chick will place 343 small American flags at the Town Square on Chapin Road (U.S. Highway 76) in memory of the 343 firemen and paramedics who lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The flags will be placed on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 10. Let us remember and honor those who lost their lives while responding to help others caught up in the terrorist attacks.
• The first-ever Wheels for Heroes open bike and car cruise-in/expo will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Piedmont Plaza located on the Highway 72 N.E. Bypass in Greenwood (across the street from Ballentine Ford and Performance Cycle). The public is invited to come see vintage and custom automobiles, 2012 models, extreme bikes and Harleys and more. Anyone who wishes to participate in the show is asked to give a minimum $5 donation. The event is being held in conjunction with the Wall That Heals Weekend which also will showcase the Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Museum plus ceremonies for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania and other events honoring veterans and EMS, fire and law enforcement personnel. The bike and care cruise-in/expo is free for the public to attend and entertainment, food vendors, the Jumping Jax Kids Zone and more are planned.
• The Wall That Heals — a traveling Vietnam veterans memorial and museum — arrived in Greenwood on Sept. 8 and will be at Lander University through Sunday, Sept. 11. Several activities are planned in conjunction with the traveling wall over the weekend in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. On Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Self Regional Healthcare will host a “Joining Forces for Health” health fair. At 7 a.m., the SMG Patriot Run (5K run/1K walk) will be held. The Wheels for Heroes open bike and car cruise-in/expo will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Piedmont Plaza (see above) and then at noon a military procession will be held from uptown Greenwood to the Lander campus. Events also are planned for Sunday, Sept. 11. A special wreath ceremony at the wall will be held at 1:30 p.m. A ceremony honoring veterans, police and fire personnel and first responders will be held at 5:30 p.m. The dedication of the Hall of Heroes will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Lander amphitheatre and then a candlelight vigil at the traveling wall will be held at 11 p.m.
