Standing left to right, District 40 State Representative Walt McLeod, Director of Newberry County Council on Aging Lynn Stockman, Newberry County Council on Aging Deputy Director Janet Ballentine, supporter Margaret Brackett, and Senator Ronnie Cromer.
The month of May is Older Americans month when seniors are recognized for their character, wisdom and life experiences.
This year the City of Newberry, County of Newberry and Newberry Council on Aging highlight the importance of building partnerships to ensure that older Americans are able to live with dignity and independence.
The theme selected for 2011 is “Older Americans: Connecting the Community.”
Historically, Older Americans month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current elder persons in our country. Every President since John F. Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May requesting the entire nation to pay tribute in some way to aging citizens in their communities.
A proclamation was issued and signed Monday, to proclaim the month of May 2011 in Newberry as Older American Month by Foster Senn, mayor, City of Newberry and Henry “Buddy” Livingston, chairman of the Newberry County Council.
There will be special activities May 11 sponsored by Newberry Council on Aging.
