NEWBERRY — Newberry College has signed NCAA Division I transfer Lamell Washington from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, where he was a redshirt.

Dave Davis, head basketball coach, had recruited Washington out of high school at Tuscarora High School in Maryland, where he played for head coach Pat Cook. Together they went 22-3 and 20-6, both school records for wins in his junior and senior years.

Washington averaged 15.5 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks per game as a senior, when he was named first team all-conference.

Washington set a school record with five games of 20 or more points and 20 or more rebounds. The 6-foot-6, 215-pounder was the eighth-ranked power forward in the state and had one of his best games that season against South Hagerstown when he scored 23 points had 17 rebounds and had nine blocks.

Coach Cook has since moved to South Carolina and led McBee High School to the state tournament third round this season. It is the first time in 20 years a McBee team has advanced.

“Lamell had the best team attitude and always put the team first,” Cook said. “That is why Tuscarora had the two best years in school history.”

Davis said he expects Washington to have a major impact on the Newberry College program.

“He can play anywhere on the floor, he shoot the three-ball well, can drive and post,” Davis said. “With three seasons of eligibility here, he could be a major piece in moving us from a good college basketball program to a great one.”

Washington joined the Wolves at mid-year and practiced with the team second semester.
