NEWBERRY — Sydney Diaz and Sidra Triplett will join the Newberry College women’s volleyball team for the 2016 season, college officials announced.

Diaz is a 5-foot-7 defensive specialist/outside hitter from River Bluff High School. Diaz was a high school teammate of current Newberry two-sport student-athlete Natalie Willis and her mother, Angie, was her assistant coach in high school.

She was a three-year all-region player at River Bluff for head coach Cindy Esposito and also played club volleyball for Magnum Volleyball Club. She led River Bluff in digs as a senior and was a North/South All-Star.

“We are excited about the addition of Sydney to our program,” said Todd Hay, head volleyball coach. “She is an extremely hard-working and driven player with excellent serve-receive and defensive skills. Her energy and competitiveness will be a lot of fun to coach as well. I am looking forward to seeing Sydney in our gym this coming fall.”

Triplett is a 5-foot-10 middle blocker/outside hitter from L.D. Bell HIgh School in Hurst, Texas. The Fort Worth resident was a two-year letterwinner for the Blue Devils, earning second team all-District 7-AAAAAA as a junior and first team all-District as a team captain in her senior season.

She also earned Academic All-District honors as a senior and was a four-year letterwinner for the track and field team, participating in the shot put and discus. She played club volleyball for Texas Image. Sidra is the daughter of Emrina and Albert Triplett and has three brothers — Albert (in the U.S. Air Force), Pares and Carlos.

“Sidra is a high energy middle who can also provide depth and strength on both the right and left side,” Hay said. “She has a very strong arm and is very athletic. Sidra also brings a lot of passion and enthusiasm to her teammates during practice and matches. We look forward to seeing Sidra in a Wolves uniform this coming fall.”

The addition of Diaz and Triplett brings the volleyball signing class to four. Andie Meredith (Dublin, Ohio) and Toni-Anne Whitlow (Poquoson, Va.) signed in the early signing period in the fall semester.
