BREVARD, N.C. — The fourth-seeded Newberry College Wolves needed a dramatic comeback win from first team all-conference singles player Elizabeth Williamson to eke out a 5-4 win over fifth-seeded Lincoln Memorial in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament at the McCoy Tennis Center on Thursday.

With the win, Newberry moves to 16-6 overall and will face top-seeded Wingate in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Friday.

Williamson battled back from the brink of defeat after both sides had picked up four wins. Williamson lost the first set in a tiebreak 6-7 (5-7) to LMU’s Elena Vasilyeva and was trailing 5-3 in the second set. She then rattled off four straight games to take a 7-5 win in the second set. Williamson used the momentum to roll to a 6-1 win in the third set and claim the win for the Wolves.

Newberry led 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match with Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo picking up an 8-5 win in the first flight and the duo of Williamson and Tara Lamers earning an 8-3 win at No. 2.

Carrillo cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles to put Newberry up 3-1 and Lamers’ 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 put the Wolves just one match away from clinching the dual. LMU won at courts 2, 5 and 6 to force Williamson’s dramatic comeback.
