CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Newberry College men’s tennis team took the Queens Royals down to the final match of the day, but were edged in a 5-4 decision at Freedom Park on Sunday.

With the loss, Newberry completes the regular season at 18-5 overall and 7-4 in the South Atlantic Conference with a new school record for dual wins in a season.

The Wolves will be the fifth seed in this week’s SAC Tournament and will play No. 4 Anderson in the quarterfinals. Anderson defeated Newberry 5-4 on March 23. All four of Newberry’s conference losses came by 5-4 margins.

The Wolves trailed 2-1 after the doubles portion of the dual, with Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson taking an 8-5 win at No. 2.

Svantesson rallied back from dropping the first set and took a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. Fernando Espana was tripped up in a 7-5, 7-5 loss at No. 1.

Angel Pizarro earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, but Richard Zeh’s 6-4, 6-3 loss at No. 5 handed Newberry the loss despite a solid 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 6 singles by Logan Adkins.

Newberry and Anderson battle in the quarterfinals of the SAC Tournament at 1 p.m. Thursday in Brevard, N.C.
