NEWBERRY — The Newberry College baseball team is tied for second in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Southeast Region Poll.

The Wolves are tied in second with Lander, with both receiving 71 votes. The Wolves went 3-0 this past weekend after defeating Brevard, King and Young Harris, as part of the Newberry Round Robin.

This is the highest the Wolves have ever been ranked in the NCBWA regional poll, with the previous program best at fifth in the region last season.

The Wolves swept three games in the SAC/Sunshine State Challenge in the first weekend of the season to bolster their status as one of the region’s top teams to start the year.

USC Aiken takes the top spot this week with 81 votes and a 6-1 record. Mount Olive is placed in fourth with 63 votes followed by UNC Pembroke in fifth with 59. Francis Marion takes the sixth spot with 55 points, North Georgia takes seventh place with 47 points and Erskine takes eighth with 20 points. Lenoir-Rhyne rounds out the ninth spot with 18 points and Columbus State takes the last spot with 16 points.

The Wolves travel to Due West to play Erskine and then are back home on Feb. 19 against Davis & Elkins at 5 p.m.
