NEWBERRY — The Newberry College baseball team downed Young Harris College, 10-7 in the nightcap of the Newberry Round Robin, on Sunday night.

The win comes on the heels of two wins in the Newberry Round Robin against Brevard and King.

Jeff Sneed (Cumming, Ga.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run while driving in three.Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) and Derek Olenchuk (Irmo) both went 1-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs apiece.

Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) put two runs on the board while Robert Kosch (Clemson), Jacob Bass (North Augusta), Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.), and all scored one run each.

Hunter Hill (Little Mountain) started the game on the bump, pitching 5.0 innings. Hill gave up 10 hits and six runs while walking one.

Mike DeLee (Dorchester) pitched 3.1 innings, tallying three strikeouts and giving up one run. Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C) tossed 0.2 innings, tallying the save. Rentz gave up one hit and struck out one.

The Mountain Lions put three runs on the board before the Wolves scored. Young Harris scored one run in the first from Nick Sexton and one run in the second from Casey Selfe. The Mountain Lions put up their third run in the fourth inning when Selfe drove Zach Beggs in on a RBI groundout.

Newberry took a temporary 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Olenchuk scored the Wolves’ first run when Bradley Nichols (Winter Springs, Fla.) hit a sac fly to centerfield. Sneed was sent home when Bass hit a RBI single to right field to make the score 3-2. Totherow then scored on a throwing error after stealing third to tie the game at 3-3. Bass gave Newberry the lead (4-3) when he scored on a sacrifice fly from Kosch.

The Mountain Lions took the lead back at 6-4 with three runs in the fifth inning. Sexton scored his second run of the game on Brett Westmoreland’s single to left field. Zach Odom and Westmoreland then scored on Zach Wall’s double to center field.

The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to gain a 7-6 lead. Gonzalez scored the first run of the inning when Sneed drew a bases loaded walk. Olenchuk and Schrenker then scored on Totherow’s single through the right side.

The Wolves sealed the win in the bottom of the eighth inning by scoring three runs. Gonzalez reached first base on an error by the shortstop which sent Kosch home for the first run of the inning. Schrenker and Gonzalez ended the scoring for Newberry with two runs on Sneed’s single to right field.

Young Harris made things interesting in the ninth inning with a bases loaded rally. Westmoreland drove in a run with a one-out single, but Totherow made a diving catch in right center to end the Mountain Lion threat.

Newberry travels to Due West to play Erskine on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.

Game 2

Newberry 11, King 5

JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg) went 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in one. Michael Gonzalez (Wilsonville, Ore.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in two and scoring three runs.

Robert Kosch (Clemson), Jacob Bass (North Augusta), Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.), Daymon Totherow (Danville, Va.), and Bradley Nichols (Winter Springs, Fla.) all scored one run each.

Zack Kelly (Daleville, Va.) took the win for Newberry on the bump, pitching 5.0 innings. Kelly gave up four runs and seven hits while tallying nine strikeouts. The win was Kelly’s second victory of the season thus far.

John Mason Reynolds (Taylors) pitched 3.0 innings, tallying three strikeouts and giving up one run. Cody Ezzell (Greensboro, N.C.) tossed 1.0 inning, giving up two hits.

Bradley started the scoring off for the Wolves in the first inning scoring off Gonzalez’s triple to right center. Gonzalez was then sent home when Smith singled to left center. Smith scored Newberry’s last run of the inning when Jason Taylor (Woodruff) singled through the left side.

King cut Newberry’s lead to 3-2 when Dylan Sligh and Tyler Bailey scored off Anthony Hunt’s double to left center. The Wolves answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second scored by Nichols and Bradley. Nichols scored off Bradley’s RBI single before Bradley scored off Gonzalez’s double to right center.

Newberry increased its lead to 6-2 when Totherow stole home in the third inning. Newberry scored again in the fourth when Kosch hit a sacrifice fly to left field sending Bass home. The Wolves kicked their lead to 8-2 when Smith doubled to center field scoring Gonzalez.

King scored two runs in the fifth when Hecken doubled to left center sending Keister and Hunt home. King cut Newberry’s lead to 8-5 in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Newberry sealed the 11-5 win in the eighth inning when Kosch, Bradley and Gonzalez scored one each.

Game 1

Newberry 4, Brevard 2

Robert Kosch (Clemson) went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run. JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg) went 1-for-2, scoring one run while Jacob Bass (North Augusta) went 2-for-3 and scored one run.

Derek Olenchuk (Irmo) went 1-for-2 at the plate, scoring one run and driving in one while Trejon Smith (Fredricksburg, Va.) went 2-for-4 and drove in two.

Mike DeLee (Dorchester) took the win for Newberry on the bump, pitching 3.0 innings. DeLee only gave up two hits and tallied three strikeouts.

Daniel Nations (Central) started the game pitching 6.0 innings. Nations gave up five hits and two runs while striking out nine.

Olenchuk put the Wolves on the board in the second inning when Totherow sent him home on a RBI single to left center. Brevard tied the game in the fourth at 1-1 when Morrison’s single pushed Smith home. Brevard then took the lead in the next at-bat with Proffitt scoring off Quinn’s single to left center.

Newberry didn’t score again until the sixth inning when Bradley crossed home plate on Olenchuk’s sacrifice fly to right field. The Wolves put two more on the board in the eighth inning to take the 4-2 win. Kosch and Bass both scored off Smith’s single to left center.
