NEWBERRY — Melissa Mendenhall won her 100th game as head coach of the Newberry High School Lady Bulldogs in just under eight seasons in a 65-46 victory Thursday evening in Pelion while the boys team ended a three-game losing streak with a win.

Mendenhall’s milestone win didn’t come easy though as Newberry trailed for the first 20:09 of the game, including being down 20-10 after the first quarter.

Nigeria Davis hit a lay-up for the 39-37 lead and Newberry never trailed after this mark, improving to 13-4 on the season and 4-1 in regional play.

Davis had a stellar night on the hardwood, finishing with 32 points as she outscored the entire Pelion team in the second half, 14-13.

Rayanna Davis got all but one of her 13 points in the second half while Tyshyria Bates and Alia Hunter each scored six points. Rehgan Miller and Lindsey Ruff scored four points apiece.

Boys game

Scoring the game’s first 10 points in the opening three minutes at Pelion High School, the boys basketball team never trailed and ended a three-game losing streak with a 86-32 victory.

Leading by 10 points after the first quarter, the visitors extended their lead at the break to 22 points and to 39 points eight minutes later.

Newberry (7-8, 2-3 in the region) hit 38 field shots while Pelion made 11 of them.

Zy Riley got all of his 17 points between the second and third quarters while Bryton Downing scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half.

Chris Neal scored 10 points while Ocyrus Chaplin and Derrick Scurry each scored seven points. The trio of Robert Houston, Darius Stephens-York and Terrell Rogers scored six points apiece.

Tyriq Goodman finished with five points while PJ Wright and Jaleel Gilliam scored four points apiece,

After a road trip to Eau Claire on Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs will host Columbia on Friday.
