NEWBERRY — The Newberry High School Bulldog boys went 1-1 in a span of 24 hours earlier this week.

On Tuesday, the Bulldog boys picked up its first win over Mid-Carolina in two years as they went on a 40-28 second-half run to take the 72-64 victory.

Mid-Carolina had a 38-32 advantage in points inside-the-paint while Newberry on the bench scoring, 40-8.

Jhi’quan Wright and Cade Ruff led the Mid-Carolina scoring with 28 and 12 points respectively. Terrell Long scored eight points while Trey Green scored six.

Keenan Boland scored five points while Malik Pearson and Tyon Thompson scored two points each. Westley Hall rounded out the Mid-Carolina scoring with one point as they fall to 5-8 and 0-2 in the region.

Ocyrus Chaplin had a double-double on the night as he scored 19 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Tyriq Goodman scored 15 points while Terrell Rogers finished the evening with 14.

Zy Riley scored eight points while Jaleel Gilliam dropped in six points. Tramas Ruff and Bryton Downing scored four points each while Derrick Scurry ended the Newberry scoring with two points.

After defeating Clinton for a tournament championship last week, the Red Devils were able to win the three-game series with Newberry as they hit a three-pointer with four seconds to go for the 58-55 victory.

Newberry led by seven points heading into the final eight minutes of play but Clinton would hit three baskets from behind the arc, while Newberry only hit one on the night as they drop to 6-6 on the season.

Chaplin led the Newberry scoring with 22 points while Riley and Downing had eight points each. Rogers saw five points fall in during the third quarter while Chris Neal scored four points.

Gilliam, Darius Stephens-York, Goodman and Scurry rounded out the Newberry scoring with two points apiece.

Newberry will host Keenan Saturday evening.
