COLUMBIA — The Newberry High School boys basketball team never could quite find the basket, a turnover or a foul called when needed to swing the momentum to their favor Tuesday night and lost a hard-fought battle at Columbia High, 58-53, to open regional play.

Newberry trailed by a point after the first quarter while both teams went into the locker rooms tied at 17-17 at the break.

Newberry took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter but the Capitals would convert seven of 12 fourth quarter free throws while Newberry hit three of their nine attempts.

Zy Riley, Ocyrus Chaplin and Derrick Scurry finished the game with 13 points apiece. Bryton Downing scored six points while Jaleel Gilliam scored three. Robert Houston and Tyriq Graham scored two points apiece while PJ Wright scored a line point in the fourth quarter.
