NEWBERRY – The Newberry College Wolves rolled past the Washington Adventist Shocks 105-87 as Brandon Taylor and Xaiver Holmes carried the team with double-doubles.

Newberry moves to 3-1 with Sunday’s win in the 2015 Newberry Invitational. Newberry has won three in a row and will look to make it four Tuesday when the Wolves face off against Queens.

Washington Adventist fell to 4-2 on the season and went 1-1 in the 2015 Newberry Invitational.

Newberry shot 38.6 percent in the field and 34.2 percent from behind the arc.

Brandon Taylor finished the game with 19, 11 rebounds and was 8-8 at the free throw line. Xavier Holmes had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Mitch Riggs added 25 points going 8-13 in the field while hitting four threes and 5-6 at the charity strike.

Newberry got quality minutes from their bench as they scored 47 points with nine from James Ashby.

The Wolves had 25 points off the 20 turnovers that Washington Adventist made and also had 19 second chance points on the 18 offensive rebounds.

The Wolves were down early 4-0 until Brandon Taylor hit a layup and Mitch Riggs hit a three to take the 5-4 lead. James Ashby hit a three of his own a minute later to make the score 11-7.

The Shock battled back to take a 21-20 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half. Newberry went on a 11 point run to take a 31-23 lead when Xavier Holmes made a layup.

Washington Adventist tried to make a run of their own but fell short as they were down by 10 when Jamaal Satisfield made a free throw. Newberry never looked back in the first half as they closed out the half with a 53-40 lead.

The second half started out with multiple technical fouls, one by each team. Tyrus Fleetwood made his first but missed his second. Brandon Taylor hit both of his free throws which gave the Wolves a 55-41 lead before the second half started.

The Wolves held on to at least and eight point lead for the rest of the half. Newberry held their largest lead with 2:17 when they were up by 19. The Shocks made the next three baskets with layups to cut the lead to 87-101.

Newberry stopped them right there to close out the game with a Matthew Spears three points.

On Saturday, Ronell Crockett’s 21 points led the Wolves past the Lees-McRae Bobcats in Newberry’s home opener. The final score was 96-91.

Newberry shot 50 percent from the field while shooting 32 percent from three point land. The Wolves had their best game of the year at the line making 26 out of 31 free throw attempts giving them a 83.9 percent at the charity line.

Ronell Crockett was 9-12 from the field and went 3-3 at the free throw line giving him 21 points while grabbing three defensive rebounds and two offensive rebounds.

Xavier Holmes had 13 points going 5-8 in the field and 3-4 at the line. Holmes led the way under the baskets with seven rebounds.

Mitch Riggs played an all-around great game with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal while going 9-10 at the free throw line.

The Wolves went up early as Crockett made a layup in the opening 20 seconds of the game and drew the foul call on Cameron Redd. Crockett hit his free throw to open the game up with a 3-0 Newberry lead. Austin Anderson of Lees-McRae hit a three pointer to tie the game up in the opening minute.

The first 10 minutes of action was great basketball with the score going back and forth. Amp Moore hit a three at the 13:06 minute mark to put the Wolves up 18-12.

The Bobcats would battle back to tie the game up at 21 when Darius Malbon made a layup and went on to take a lead when Keegan Crabtree hit a three to take a 24-21 lead.

The Wolves came right back with three free throws made, two made by Mason Spease and one made by James Stepp. With 4:28 J. Copeland hit a three to pull the Wolves within four. At the end of the first half, the Wolves were down 46-40 to the Bobcats.

The Wolves opened up the second half with a steal by Dhonte Ford and then two free throws by him. Ford then forced a turnover and hit a lay to pull the Wolves within two.

The Bobcats would go right down the floor to hit a layup of their own to go back up by four. Newberry came right back to tie the game at 51 when Gerald Evans made a layup and then hit a three to take a 54-51 lead. James Ashby hit a three pointer to push the Wolves lead to 57-51.

The Wolves held on to that lead for the rest of the way and the Bobcats cut the lead to three when Austin Anderson hit another three and then Cameron Redd hit a jumper to tie the game at 91. Riggs made two free throws to regain the lead with 45 seconds left.

Brandon Taylor blocked a shot and hit Xavier Holmes on an outlet pass and he laid it in for two too put the Wolves up 95-91. Evans hit a free throw to make the score 96-91 which would give the Wolves the win.
