WARE SHOALS — The Whitmire High School Wolverines ended the regular season against the Ware Shoals High School Fighting Hornets with a 27-0 victory.

The Wolverines scored the first touchdown of the night when Alex Ellison made a one yard run in the first quarter. Cole Eison made a successful point after touchdown kick. In the second quarter John Burnside scored from the wingback spot on a four yard run. He then added the two point conversion to increase the team’s lead to 15-0 by halftime.

Burnside added another touchdown in the fourth quarter on a seven yard run. The two-point conversion run failed. The final points of the night came when Chris Keisler scored following a two yard catch from Burnside. The PAT was no good.

Head Coach Charlie Jenkins said this game had another strong showing by defense.

“Two important catches by senior Hunter Adams, hard running by Devin Vo, John Burnside, AJ Renwick and Alex Ellison, behind an ever improving offensive line,” he said.

The Wolverines take the fourth place spot in Region II-A. The team will be on the road to Ridge Spring-Monetta in the first round of the playoffs on Nov. 13. Jenkins said the team hopes to practice smarter, not harder, in the coming weeks.

“We plan on being able to study a little more film with the guys. A regular week goes by pretty quickly and we do not get to do as much film as I like,” he said. “We will practice about an hour and a half each day for two weeks. That is a little shorter than we usually go.”

The team will also continue to lift and run so they do not lose their edge. Jenkins said the number one thing is to try and stay healthy while they enjoy being in the playoffs again.

“We have had some bumps and bruises over the last few weeks. We will use the two weeks to get healthy before we play on Nov. 13,” he said.

Compared to when the season started in August, Jenkins said that both offense and defense better understand their plays and schemes, which he says is easier to play fast.

“On defense Coach Campbell, Coach King and Coach McCarley really have them playing with great effort and believing in the team concept of defense with each player doing their job and not trying to do too much, which often gets us in trouble,” he said. “Our offensive line and tight ends have improved tremendously over the past two seasons working with Coach Steve Lockwood and Coach Chris Martin. We just would not be where we are without the patient and consistent guidance of those two coaches.”
