FAIRFIELD — The Newberry High School Bulldogs travel to Fairfield Central tonight to take on the Griffins at 7:30 p.m.

With a win, Newberry would improve to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in the region.

Fairfield Central possesses an identical record and will be looking to gain the upper hand in the region by remaining undefeated.

“They’re a good, quality football team,” said Newberry head coach Phil Strickland. “There’s a lot at stake.”

Strickland said his offense will be looking to limit mistakes and control the football, thereby keeping the Griffin’s offense off the field.

Newberry’s biggest offensive weapons last week were Yafari Werts and Chris Wadsworth who each gained over 100 yards for the Bulldogs.

On the other side of the ball, Strickland wants to put pressure on the quarterback as much possible.

Newberry is coming off a short week of practice due to the heavy rainfall over the weekend and the ensuing school cancellations.

However, rather than postpone the game until Monday night, Strickland opted to settle the contest at its original scheduling.

“Our kids do better when we play on Friday, even with a short week,” said Strickland.

Newberry’s next game will be at home against rival Mid-Carolina.
